    Named for the Owyhee (O-wy-hee) Mountains. This mountain range rises from the desert plains of Southwest idaho and extends into Nevada. The "Owyhee" is the original name for the Hawaiian Islands. It was given to the mountain range by Islanders that had come to Idaho in search of gold and were reminded of their homeland. The name for the Islands was modified to Hawaii, but the Idaho version remains unchanged.
